Abstract: Rotating zigzag bed (RZB) has about 400 cases of industrial application in distillation process. The successful applications fully demonstrated the advantages of RZB such as high gas-liquid mass transfer rate and small size. There are broad prospects of the employment of RZB in waste water treatment. The preliminary attempt was made in this paper that RZB was used to strictly control ammonia nitrogen content of the industrial waste water before emitted into the waste water bath. Firstly, experiment was carried out in a small single-rotor RZB for the removal of ammonia nitrogen in the waste water containing ammonia and ammonium sulfate by stripping, with the recovery of a certain concentration of ammonia solution. Secondly, an industrial RZB with three rotors and rotor outer diameter of 750mm and motor power of 15 KW was designed depending on experimental data and used in the treatment of ammonium sulfate solution with ammonia nitrogen content of 3.5%. The results of the industry RZB showed that the capacity was greater than 1500 kg per hour, ammonium sulfate solution containing ammonia in the bottom was less than 200 PPM, and aqua ammonia concentration in the top was about 25%.
