Laboratory and pilot plant operations are essential for process development. Since the scale of the operation is relatively small, the hazards are often overlooked. Nevertheless, the safety hazards posed by these operations are unique. For example, new technology for which reactive hazard information is unknown, and close personnel interaction with hazardous materials are not often seen at a commercial scale but common at the pilot plant scale. This session seeks papers on how to improve safety in laboratory, pilot plant, and small-scale production. Presentations regarding best practices addressing minimum reactive data required before piloting and methodologies to perform pilot plant safety reviews are examples of papers that will be welcome in this session.
