Abstract

Siemens experiences a continuously expanding request from customers to utilize varying gaseous fuels for power production. From such requests follows an increased need for testing new fuels and fuel systems limitations. In recent years Siemens has performed a number of fuel flexibility tests on the medium size range industrial gas turbines. This paper is a survey of Siemens experience on diluting natural gas with;

- up to 50 vol-% nitrogen (inert gas),

- heavy hydrocarbons with testing up to 23 vol-% pentane and 100% ethane

- up to 40 vol-% hydrogen.

A novel approach for fuel testing has been developed, EBIT, (Swedish acronym for “Experimental burner in test engine”) were a single burner rig testing is combined with a full scale engine test to give a cost effective and flexible solution. The combination of the two approaches is accomplished by using a separate feed of testing fuel to one or more burners in a standard gas turbine installation where the other burners use standard fuel.

Also the function and principles of Siemens power producing industrial gas turbine, particularly the combustion system, is described. It is proved that the Siemens 3rd generation DLE burner is a very fuel flexible and reliable, low emissions solution for both oil & gas upstream applications and in various chemical process in the industry.

This enables use of waste gases from various processes.
