(152c) Trends in Olefin Plant Reliability-Related Production Loss, 1999-2011

Abstract: TRENDS IN Olefin Plant RELIABILITY-RELATED PRODUCTION LOSS, 1999-2011

Claire L. Cagnolatti

Vice President of Chemicals Studies

HSB Solomon Associates, LLC

Solomon Associates has conducted studies of the olefins manufacturing industry for more than 25 years.  As part of these Olefin Studies, Solomon gathers and analyzes data on the duration of plant slowdowns (operating at reduced throughput) and plant shutdowns by cause.  Reliability-related incidents are analyzed separately from others, such as commercial or weather-related incidents, and trends are shown in the Olefin Study results for three study cycles (6 years).

This paper will show long-term trends in the duration of production loss incidents by cause, using data from 1999 through 2011.  Each of the major reliability-related outage categories (Process-Related, Mechanical Failure, and Utility Failure) will be analyzed in detail to determine whether the main causes of these outage incidents have changed since 1999. The paper will conclude with a summary of the trend data findings.
