An Electronic, Innovative Process Safety Study Guide and Resource
The PSM eBook
Chemical Engineering departments have always had industrially focused, chemical engineering curriculum. Since the promulgation of OSHA 1910.119, Process Safety Management (PSM) has become a major focus area for industry. Students with industrial experience or specific PSM training have become more in demand. Coupled with this industry demand, Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, Inc., (ABET) has added PSM training to curriculum requirements. This triggered both student and faculty interest in a new, comprehensive 3 credit elective course in Process Safety Management (PSM). Three experienced alumni from a major university collaborated with the faculty to develop, test and team teach a 45 session course on PSM in the spring semesters of both 2011 and 2012. After very positive outcome metrics from over 80 students, the course became a required course in the undergraduate chemical engineering curriculum in April, 2012. This interactive, electronic book was created to serve as a textbook for this upper level course. The PSM eBook can be used in an industrial environment as self-paced electronic training or periodic refresher training. The PSM eBook is also designed to serve as a practical resource and reference guide to any practicing engineer. The session will cover the creation, use, outcome metrics and client feedback on how The PSM eBook is improving general understanding in a very important safety subject.
