Avoiding Waterside Corrosion Problems in Ethylene Plant Steam Systems
Proper water chemistry control is essential to maintaining reliable, efficient operation of the steam generating systems in ethylene plants. Problems that have been encountered in transfer line exchangers, steam turbines and surface condensers will be discussed and the actions needed to correct these problems presented.
Most ethylene plant steam system problems stem from feedwater contamination, although some are the result of improper chemistry controls. Examples of both caustic and acidic phosphate corrosion of TLEs and the steps needed to avoid future occurrences are discussed. In addition steam turbine fouling and corrosion problems along with the recommendations for monitoring and control to avoid future problems are presented. An example of how changing neutralizing amine treatment without changing pH control to reduce condenser corrosion and thus copper in the condensate will also be discussed.
