A deflagration incident occurred during the cleaning procedure of a drum that was used in a coating process. The pressure generated from the incident damaged the drum as well as several pieces of equipment that were connected through ductwork for the dust collection system. Thankfully, no personnel were injured during the incident. This case study will describe the coating process and the incident, provide an incident analysis, review the process safety information and evaluate results from additional testing that was performed. Lessons learned will be summarized including hazards related to material compatibility, thermal stability and combustible dust.
