To improve process safety and instrument maintenance decisions, CCPS PERD and the MKOPSC Instrument Reliability Network are developing better reliability tools to provide high quality, valid, and useful data pertaining to the hydrocarbon and petrochemical industries. The documentation required for the validation and maintenance of instrumentation and control devices must be completed properly in accordance with established criteria to demonstrate the appropriateness of credited risk reduction. Maintenance personnel are quite often overwhelmed with the challenge of tracking the testing frequency, inspection procedures, due dates and compliance for the instrumentation and controls in their areas of responsibility.
This presentation will review procedures and work processes that have been incorporated successfully for testing and validation of these devices. Technicians can quickly document compliance, pending due dates, completion dates, corrective actions and comments when an efficient documentation management system is in place. This system can be utilized to track and assess reliability, instrument and compliance data from proof test activities during plant turnarounds, and periodic safety instrumented function validation and routine maintenance.
