Measuring Operational Discipline: Is it Possible?
Operational Discipline (OD) is widely recognized as an essential ingredient in the PSM Excellence equation; “everyone doing the job ‘right’ every time.” While there is widespread agreement as to the need for OD, there is far less agreement as to how it is created and/or improved.
Foundational to all improvement processes is feedback. The degree to which feedback is representative and accurate will determine the appropriateness and ultimate value of the response to that feedback. In the pursuit of a robust Operational Discipline culture, what types of OD feedback can be validated, trusted or confidently acted upon? Said another way, how should the strength of one’s Operational Discipline be measured and quantified?
Starting in 2000, DuPont began assessing and measuring Operational Discipline. And since then, at least four generations of OD measurement and feedback processes have been utilized, each successive approach building on the learning’s from its predecessor. This presentation will introduce DuPont’s latest and most comprehensive OD measurement technique as well as learning’s from its early use.
