Maximizing capacity and flexibility, improving efficiency, and increasing run length of the Main Fractionator is of the esence for a Crude Distillation Unit, particularly when processing different types of Crude, including heavy and sour feedstock. Among other steps, these goals can be achieved only with a proper combination of differen types of mass transfer components, suitable not only for high performance but also for great fouling and corrosion resistance, particularly at the top section of the column.
Folowing the great success of the revamp implemented 5 yesars ago, a similar retrofitting has been implemented in another twin Unit of the same Refinery. This paper will describe in details the revamp of the Unit, including the modifications of the Main Fractionator, and the upgrading pf the process control.
