(4a) Bibliography of Dr. Elzear Lemieux

Dr. Elzear Lemieux had a B.S. degree in Chemistry from Assumption College and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

Dr. Lemieux began his career at M.W. Kellogg in 1950. Throughout his career, he was primarily involved the design of trays and packings, and vessel design, in general.  He was a strong proponent for the use of sieve trays in the chemical processing industry.

He and his team performed extensive testing of sieve tray capacity at the M.W. Kellogg laboratory in Piscataway, New Jersey.  These tests studied and quantified the effects of hole diameter, tray spacing, weir rate, and vapor rate on tray capacity and they also led to an organized set of correlations for sieve tray capacity and downcomer backup.

Dr. Lemieux was a supporter of FRI since its inception. He served on the FRI Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) from 1960 through 1975 for the M.W. Kellogg Company. He was extremely interested in basic fundamental research on tray and packing capacities and efficiencies. He retired from M.W. Kellogg in 1982, but continued to support FRI and attended the FRI TAC meetings. He was Kellogg’s screener of FRI Topical and Progress Reports, until he stopped consulting for Kellogg in 1991.

He and his wife of 65 years, Claire, were very active members in the community and especially in their church, St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Houston. His wife passed away in February 2013.

Dr. Lemieux passed away in November 2013.

This presentation describes some of Dr. Lemieux’s contributions to separations engineering.
