Many Automation and Instrumentation Designers are aware of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) as the combination of field instrumentation, logic solvers, and application code designed together according to specific technical standards to execute the safety controls, alarms and interlocks.
Are you as aware of the equally critical importance of managing the human aspects of SIS over the complete safety lifecycle?
Related industry standards and recognized publications outline lists of required operating discipline content. However, it falls to the facility and implementation projects to create the documentation and management systems which both meet these technical requirements and do so in manner which is CONSISTENT, COMPLETE, CLEAR and CORRECT so that the management system remains sustainable over time.
Covering all aspects of SIS documentation and management systems is not achievable within the limits of a single session. So in this introductory presentation, we will focus on some of the most common elements of SIS related documentation across the safety lifecycle as represented in IEC61511/ISA-84. The author will address the key concepts and content of these documents which in her experience are the most essential to facilitate successful management of the overall SIS program over the years and across the many functions involved.
