Water shortage is a bottleneck for major shale plays in the U.S. and the world. Sustainable water reuse is urgent for the shale gas industry. In this paper, different biochar was prepared from wood chips by pyrolysis at different temperatures. The biochar prepared was tested on removal of inorganic salts, hydrocarbons, clay fine. The adsorption capacity of the biochar was also obtained for typical contaminants in flowback water from hydraulic fracturing industry.
