Big Data Analytics in Upstream Engineering

Co-chair(s)

Chatterjee, S., Shell Global Solutions US

Today’s world is at a major inflection point with exponentially increasing amounts of structured and unstructured data, popularly termed as big data. Every day, massive amounts of data is generated by everything around us at all times. Every industry is faced with unique challenges to extract meaningful value from the way big data is generated, transmitted and received at an alarming volume, velocity and variety. With the continuous advancement of exploration technology and digitalization of oilfield services, the overwhelming detail and complexity of data captured by the oil and gas industry will also continue to grow and propel big data growth. From subsurface imaging and visualization, resource estimation using sophisticated computer models, extraction through drilling, production data analysis and decision making, volatility of crude pricing and managing the health, safety, security and environmental risks associated with oil and gas exploration, the business is extensively data dependent. Smart solutions of leveraging technologies to store, manage and utilize big data for upstream research and development and commercial operation is the strategy for competitive advantage. In this session, we would like to invite talks where speakers have had experience accessing, assimilating or analyzing big data in upstream engineering and flow assurance applications. Case studies of specific big data challenges or implementation of smart tools to solve these challenges in the upstream business are also welcome
