(163b) Using Steel Slag for CO2 Capture in Saturated Packed Bed

Carbon dioxidecapture/sequestrate is the most promising options to reduce the CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.  Industrial mineral carbonation of alkaline wastes, an increasingly promising component of CO2 capture/storage, may play an important role.  Particularly the steelmaking slags are of interest because of their high calcium contents.  In addition to CO2 fixation, the carbonation of these waste materials also reduces the cost associated with handling the waste and minimizes the release of some harmful substances to the environment.

Considering the after mentioned advantages, a significant number of research initiatives have been undertaken at different organization in the world.  These findings indicates that the prospect of carbonation of steel slag to become an economically-feasible CO2 mitigation option.  However, the successful implementation of this technology is likely to rely on the (i) availability of affordable and recyclable solvents/additives, (ii) accelerating and maximizing the CO2 fixation by engineering the reactions involve of in order to achieve appreciable sequestration rate and (iii) detail economic analysis.

The proposed research mainly focused on enchantment of the CO2 fixation using steel making slags by accelerating the reaction between CO2 and the minerals in the slags. It is expected that the development and implementation of the proposed technology will create new opportunities both in the area of research and industrial applications to address both the CO2 emission and steel management issues.
