(65ag) Availability Assessment of Water and Energy, a Proposition of Management to Chemical Industry

The evidences that the chemical industry is not ready to deal with interruption of operations resulting from climate change and the complexity of decisions is increasingly apparent. In the state of São Paulo / Brazil, petrochemical industries are using served water from sewage treatment plants to supply the cooling tower makeup water. However, industries are not striving to analyze the availability of water and energy to suit the demand to supply.

The setting of premises to build scenarios of water availability, energy and skills is required. This will allow to make strategic plans, control programs, techniques and methods of investigation that aspects of products and processes are considered as well as the characteristics of the culture and behavior of managers and employees.

The water supply scenario and its use in the agriculture, livestock and cities indicate that there will be reduced availability of water for industry. As these consumer sectors are disorganized and there are losses in the distribution of water in the order of 30%, it is up to industry to worry about meeting their demand while reducing your water consumption.

The aim of this paper is to present an analysis model of availability of water and energy in the chemical industry, along with a behavioral adjustment model to enhance a large reduction in water consumption and energy supply to meet the expectations of these. The reduction in water consumption and energy depends on: management actions; switching procedures; behavior changes in the short term; application reuse techniques and reprocessing wastewater and energy in the medium term; and development and installation of technologies to increase the supply of water and energy and to reduce demand for water and energy in the long run.

Initially normal trend of events without intervention in the provision of management or demand management is considered. If occur climate change altering the supply of water and energy, on the other is the population and industrial growth by increasing demand for water and energy. In this case the industry will become hostage to a situation of lack of water and energy when looking at demand in relation to supply. In our case this will occur in 2022.

The analysis of availability compensates for the reduced supply with even greater reduction in demand. The analysis method of availability is divided into the following steps considering the comparison between the supply of water and energy with climate change with the demand for water and energy with preventive actions. Should perform prediction of what should happen in the future to adjust the present with the routine programs. This methodology is divided into the following steps: (1) Definition of current and future supply scenarios based on  IPCC; (2) Identification of current demand scenario and future to compare Offer; (3) Analysis of the availability of water, energy and competence; (4) Culture Analysis and People for behavioral change; (5) Analysis of Routine and Integrated Management; and (6) Compliance Analysis of consumption of water and energy. A case of the chemical fertilizer industry are tested.
