(65aw) Study on Thermal Radiation of Enclosed Ground Flare

Flare system is an important part of the safety systems in refineries or petrochemical facilities, and on oil and  gas platforms. There are generally two types of flares: the elevated flare and the enclosed ground flare. Enclosed ground flares get more and more applications because of its high efficiency, flame invisibility and low nose. During an emergency flaring situation, a portion of the heat produced by the flame will radiate to its immediate surroundings. The amount of radiation heat emitted by flares is important in the design and location of flare systems. But there are no theoretical or empirical methods for predicting the radiation of enclosed ground flares in current literatures. Predicting the thermal radiation becomes one of the greatest challenges in designing a groud flare system. To investigate the radiation of the enclosed ground flare, the flaring process of a series of flare gases were simulated using CFD method. The temperature and radiation field was calculated. Results shows that the radiation flux at ground level were below 1.58kW/m2; at the height above 9m, the 1.58kW/m2 radiation isopleth can reach 60-70 meters radially from the enclosed ground flare axis,so the design of towers or other elevated structures containing operating platforms should consider radiat.
