(160f) Managing Hazardous Chemical Safety Knowledge

It is useful for chemical manufacturers to ensure that the hazardous chemical safety knowledge that is accumulated over the years is properly managed, so that it can be disseminated among the employees that require it in their daily tasks. Further, as companies continue to face significant workforce changes that result in transition from veterans to new workers, it is important to find ways to bridge safety knowledge gaps. Chevron Phillips Chemical Company has been developing an in-house knowledgebase for several hazardous chemicals of interest to capture, maintain and readily access key information. Our experience in this regard will be shared using ethylene, propylene and butadiene as examples. We will cover the type of information contained in the knowledgebase, as well as implementation and oversight of the system. We will also discuss some of the early benefits that were realized by having access to a safety knowledgebase.
