(187c) Key Technology Challenges for Megacrackers

Authors

Maifield, D. - Presenter, Technip Stone & Webster
The purpose of this paper is to identify key technology challenges in equipment design, utility systems and piping design that have arisen during the engineering phase of large capacity ethylene plants. The paper will specifically review the key technology aspects for reactors, driers and drums design, separation towers design and heat transfer equipment. The paper will also examine the impact on utility systems design - particularly CW and steam systems and the design criteria for large sized specialized piping/piping materials etc. Technip Stone & Webster Process Technology has recently designed 11 ethylene plants that can be classified as megacrackers and this paper will concentrate on the technology challenges faced in the largest capacity plants. These technology challenges while primarily impacted by plant capacity are also affected by plant location and owner requirements so these features are also discussed. As successful solutions for the key technology challenges in equipment design, utility systems and piping design are achieved, then a forecast of the next hurdles for future megacrackers is presented.
