Chemical companies are continuously exploring opportunities to run their units more efficiently and limit the technical risks. A key risk for raw pyrolysis gasoline processing units are impurities present in the raw feedstock, which may adversely influence performance characteristics of its hydrogenation catalysts. A key aspect to Pygas unit operation is therefore a better understanding of the catalytic robustness and tolerance to the impurities typically present in crude Pygas feedstock.

This paper will focus on some common poisons found in 1st Stage pygas processing units and their impact on nickel based catalyst. The contaminants include carbon disulfide (CS2), and common forms of organic nitrogen, silicon, and lead. The paper studies the short term effect of these poisons on the catalyst performance.
