Chrome VI is a well-known and toxic material that is present in many industries and OSHA has set standards for the safe handling and exposure to it. Recent findings at NOVA Chemicalsâ have revealed the presence of chrome VI at various locations within the cracking furnaces. This paper discusses areas of the furnaces where the chrome VI was found, the methods used to detect it, safe handling of contaminated materials, suggested PPE to protect workers from exposure and ways to neutralize the chrome VI to safer products. The paper will also describe how chrome VI was found and the observed concentration levels. Some potential sources of alkali metal and alkaline earth metals that are believed to have resulted in chrome VI formation within the furnaces are also identified
