This paper reported a novel method for removing inorganic salts from hydraulic fracturing flowback water by cooling. Both model compounds and real samples were tested. Model compounds study shows that the cooling effect for the following five salts are in the order of

KCl > Sr(NO3)2 > NaCl > CsCl > CaCl2.

The real samples show that about 3% of inorganic salts were removed by cooling. This method can be applied to hydraulic fracturing flowback water recycling. The method could be improved the separation of oil from the water before the test.
