Process gas compressors in ethylene units are subject to fouling. Depending on cracking severity and feedstock, the extent of fouling in compressors varies. A correct combination of wash oil and treatment programs can maximize unit efficiency and gas throughput to achieve desirable run lengths of 6 years and more. The current paper provides an overview of the effects of operational variables (feed, temperature, oxygen intrusion, water injection, and wash oil) in fouling formation and how one conducts tests in the lab to best simulate these variables. This paper also looks at how Nalco Champion investigates individual treatment components (i.e. anti-polymerant, anti-oxidant, dispersants, filmers, metal deactivators) and how they can be used to hinder or mitigate fouling and to protect the machine.
