2018 Spring Meeting and 14th Global Congress on Process Safety
Process Development Division
Pilot Plant and Laboratory Safety II
Tuesday, April 24, 2018 - 11:27am to 11:45am
Process safety is key part of scale-up from lab to pilot to production. A comprehensive scale-up strategy that encompasses each step will be presented. Calorimetry and its importance at validating reaction kinetics, vent sizing, and exothermic reaction modeling will be discussed. Value of this key information in understanding the thermal safety of chemical processes, risk assessment, and process design as part of the scale-up protocol will be outlined. Design, development, and scale-up of phenolic resins will be given as a case study. The approach will outline the significance of modeling, design of experiments, latitude studies, pilot batches, to make data driven decisions as part of the commercialization process.
