Although pressure relief design is one of the most classical areas of process safety, recent activity in this sphere has rekindled an interest in the area in the broader process safety community. Governmental findings related to the rules associated with inlet pressure drop for relief valves have led to new experimental programs and analysis in an attempt to actually characterize relief valve stability. Development in this area has led to interesting findings regarding the efficacy of the 3% rule normally applied to such systems. In addition to relief valve stability, there is ongoing development in the areas of two phase flow and reactive relief. Papers related to the area of pressure relief design which offer insight into advances in the field or that offer novel approaches to traditional issues are encouraged.
