Whether addressing capacity increases, change in feedstocks and/ or resolving a known constraint, the approach to revamping distillation tower should follow a systematic methodology. A clear problem definition and objectives is imperative for defining the scope of the revamp. Evaluation of the tower performance in its current state and identification of capacity constraint will define the gaps to fill for meeting the revamp objectives. Alternatives can then be evaluated and short listed for framing the scope of the revamp. Those alternatives may revolve around process integration, replacement of tower internals and/ or new tower. Vendor selection would follow, with detail engineering, fabrication of the equipment, installation and commissioning. Those activities will require review of vendor proposals, drawings, shop and field inspections. Technical support would also be provided during commissioning and startup. This paper discusses process engineering activities involved in the different phase of a revamp. Simulation work and gathering of historical data is discussed relative to problem definition and identifying gaps. Data typically supplied to equipment vendors and key parameters reviewed from proposals, drawings are also discussed along with tips for shop inspection and commissioning.
