(186a) Controlling Alarm Floods to Meet ISA 18.2 Metrics

Anyone that has spent time in a process control room knows the distractions and difficulty that can be caused by a flood of alarms annunciating in a stream over a short period of time. We will examine the factors that affect alarm floods as well as the practical approaches that make a significant difference by reducing the incidents of floods. Graphic results before and after implementation of dynamic alarm management will be shown along with their relationship to the ISA 18.2 Alarm Performance Metric Standard. We will also dispel some of the alarm management myths that survive in industry today.
