Safety Instrumented System (SIS) is an irreplaceable active protection layer that prevents the propagation of process accidents and plays an important role in reducing the risk of accidents. In addition to the sensor response triggering the SIS, a human emergency button is often provided in practice to ensure that the SIS is triggered by personnel in the event of the sensor part failure. Due to human factors added, the emergency button will improve the reliability of the SIS. However, there is no research to study the human reliability of the SIS upon sensor part failure in a continuous operation chemical plant, and how human factors can improve and affect the overall reliability of the SIS still remain undiscovered. In this paper, a verification methodology was proposed which integrated with Cognitive Reliability and Error Analysis Method (CREAM) and Reliability Block Diagram (RBD) to emphasize human reliability analysis of the SIS verification. The operator behavior is subdivided into several steps and the Human Error Possibility (HEP) is calculated by a modified CREAM. Then the RBD method is used to verify the SIS reliability considering human factors. An SIS system of one reacting furnace was taken as a case study using this method to show how human factors can improve the reliability of the SIS. The proposed methodology allows SIS verification considering human factors to improve safety integrity level in real practice thus help stakeholders saving costs and making more decisions on SIS implementation.
