A fundamental approach to any program that targets the implementation of a safety process culture is to work within reality, going beyond procedures and compliance. To facilitate the emergence of the unspoken and of the unwritten rules of the game, is essential to stimulate the dialogue among leaders that brings about their vulnerabilities and opens new perspectives to address them effectively. This paper presents a program designed by experienced professionals with expertise in andragogy, organizational learning and safety, aiming to increase a Process Safety Leadership Culture. Developed in a Brazilian Energy Company, based on a benchmark made within the industry, the program promoted genuine discussions in a safety space, building trust among leaders.
Creating opportunities for dialogue between different hierarchical levels simultaneously and inviting external partners to collaborate actively in such discussions in a regular basis, is a central pillar to the continuous improvement of the safety process leadership. Such approach allows maximizing the strengths and working on the weaknesses of the existing culture, joining capabilities to face the challenges that a solid safety process culture must handle.
