Process Safety & Tailings Management: The VALE Journey After B1 Tailings Dam Failure

Rafael will share how the failure of Tailings Dam B1 in Brumadinho, Brazil, in 2019, has triggered significant changes at Vale and led the company to continually seek to improve the management of its structures for containing waste and sediments with the application of Process Safety management principles.
Those changes include:
- Improved governance with 3 lines of defense that ensure the effectiveness of risk management;
- Adoption of inherently safer solutions with the elimination of upstream dams and the increase of dry iron ore production that does not generate tailings;
- Implementation of thorough Hazard Identification and Risk Analysis of its assets and strict management of critical controls.
This transformation has contributed to making Vale´s operations increasingly safer and more sustainable.
