Beta-Release of Hydrogen Safety Codes and Standards Applicability Navigator (HySCAN) Informational Tool

There are new stakeholders entering into discussions about hydrogen system design and safety, and there are many existing codes and standards that relate to the design and safety of hydrogen systems. Some of these codes and standards are relevant to nearly any system, while others may refer to a very specific component within a system. An informational tool called Hydrogen Safety Codes and Standards Applicability Navigator (HySCAN) has been released to the public as an initial “beta” version. The overall goal of this tool is to make it easier for new and existing stakeholders of hydrogen systems to identify what codes and standards exist currently and may apply to their particular system. A user can list what type of components that a system of interest has, answer some short checklist-style questions, and the tool can then return a list of potentially relevant or useful hydrogen codes and standards. It should be emphasized that this is not a definitive list of codes and standards, nor should this be viewed as anything more than an informational tool. However, this tool should help identify what codes and standards exist for a particular system type, which can be informative for all stakeholders involved, even if those codes and standards are not legally required for that jurisdiction. This can help inform productive conversations between all stakeholders around a hydrogen system, including developers, authorities, and members of the public. The initial beta-version of the tool will be demonstrated, and feedback solicited.
