IEA TCP Task 43 - Subtask Safety Distances: Electrolyser

Today local regulations for hydrogen installations differ depending on the country. They provide different safety and/or separation distances for the same hydrogen installation. The purpose of this work is to give an insight on different methodologies and recommendations developed for risk management and consequences assessment of accidental scenarios. This is achieved for the case study of an industrial electrolyser (alkaline and PEM technologies). The work includes the lessons learned from previous incidents including recommendations for the mitigation barriers, a review of the available methodologies, and identification of the divergent points. Moreover, it makes suggestions for the harmonization approach. This work also sheds light on the most impacting scenarios and the associated leakage size.
