The Next Evolution in Hydrogen Risk Analysis: “Knowledge Based” Process Hazards Analysis Utilising Developments in Digital Technology and Platforms

The current “best practice” for executing Process Hazards Analysis (PHA) or Layer of Protection Analysis (LOPA) studies often results in less than desirable outcomes within an end user organization such as:

  • Inconsistent Risk Ranking between like process units, e.g. electrolyzers / purification units / compressors / vents, when studies are conducted by different facilitators / study teams.
  • Over estimation of Risk resulting in potentially unwarranted spend to manage / close Risk Gaps.
  • Under estimation of Risk resulting in potentially higher than acceptable Risk Gaps remaining invisible to the end user.

Poor risk analysis execution especially in the new hydrogen industry sphere, has significant long-term cost impacts as well as increased business risk for end user organizations.

Adopting a “Knowledge Based” study methodology in the new hydrogen industry represents the next evolution of PHA or LOPA study execution. The term “Knowledge based” relates to studies that templatize recurring hazards associated with e.g. electrolyzers / purification units / compressors / vents, so that they are not missed, these are based on historical incidents and previous analysis, while maintaining the workshop aspects to allow personnel to review and add to prior historical findings. This white paper will highlight how “Knowledge Based” PHA / LOPA execution within the hydrogen industry can result in:
