Preliminary Findings from Liquid Hydrogen Pooling and Vaporization Experiments

We present preliminary findings from liquid hydrogen pooling and vaporization experiments performed in a controlled, constant cross-wind. The experiments investigated the effect of cross-wind flow-rate (from 1-5 mph), substrate type (steel and concrete), and liquid hydrogen spill rate (from 10-50 lpm) on the rate of pooling and downwind dispersion of liquid hydrogen. While previous experimental efforts worldwide have produced some data for liquid hydrogen pooling and vaporization, these experiments were unique in that they were performed in a semi-protected facility where the cross-wind flow rate was uni-directional, steady, and controlled, rather than relying on favorable ambient conditions. This experimental configuration produces data that is more suitable for both pooling and dispersion model validation than has been previously generated. In this presentation, the preliminary findings from these experiments are discussed as well as the potential implications for revising and developing science-based regulations, codes and standards for liquid hydrogen.
