Chemical looping, decomposing a reaction into multiple sub-reactions in separated reactors, offers a clean and efficient way to convert fuels or to conduct redox reactions. Chemical looping process refers to many key issues of fluidization engineering, such as the preparation of oxygen carrier particles and their fluidization characteristics in chemical looping reactors. In this paper, issues of fluidization engineering in chemical looping combustion/gasification were discussed. Firstly, the design, formulation and manufacture of oxygen carrier particles were introduced. It was pointed out that composite oxygen carrier with catalytic function or with oxygen decoupling was the promising candidate materials. Large-scale preparation of these promising oxygen carriers is of great significance for chemical looping process. Due to the alternate redox reactions of oxygen carrier in separated reactors, the inter-connected fluidization bed was an optimize choice of chemical looping reactors. The bubble and fast fluidization characteristics of oxygen carrier particles in difference reaction atmospheres at high temperature should be explored. Based on previous findings, it indicated that the matching of reaction rate and oxygen carrier capacity and the non-touching of two reaction atmospheres between two inter-connected fluidization bed is the vital factor for guaranteeing the steady operation of reactors. The syngas, hydrogen, and methane can be produced depended on the different oxygen carriers and various reactors configuration combination. In recent years, we propose to yield high-valued chemicals by chemical looping process using biomass or coal, a new field for fluidization engineering.
