Education and experience have formed us to foster steady-state conditions as the operational mode of choice for numerous water and wastewater treatment processes, including water reuse. However, due to the influent variability and the heavy reliance on electricity during processing, the energy in water reuse is almost never a steady-state operation. Furthermore, due to the dynamics of power generation, the carbon footprint of both power generation and water processes are almost never at steady-state. We present here our work on the water-energy nexus, process intensification, and resource recovery. We also discuss carbon and energy footprint analyses from case studies around the world.
