Scaling up to commercialization requires moving from laboratory scale activities to pilot plants to demonstration units. While not all processes go through every step, all processes go through some of the steps. Ensuring the safety of the operations at each step is demanding and challenging. This presentation will highlight some of the major concerns and suggest some appropriate safeguards and guidelines. Proposed topics include:
- Fully understanding the chemistry
- Evaluating the consequences of new process equipment and operations
- Identifying the warning signs of problems
- Conducting effective hazard analysis and risk assessments
- Using standards effectively to improve safety
- Providing appropriate safety systems
- Managing change safely
- Auditing the operation effectively
