Manufacturing is the third-largest water using sector in Texas, behind only irrigation and municipal use. By 2060, the annual demand for water to be used in manufacturing processes is expected to increase by 67%. Serious drought conditions can be a significant threat to meeting the needs of all water users. If conditions similar to the historic drought of record were to occur, as much as 470 thousand acre-feet of the state’s manufacturing demands could go unmet, at the cost of a significant economic impact to the state, if no actions are taken to meet these needs.
