Water is required for various needs: in agricultural irrigation; for direct population use â?? sanitation and drinking water; for industrial process water use in fire suppression/sprinkler system and thermal management and other industrial uses, for example the food and beverage industry. Regardless of the end-use of the water, addition of biocides is routinely performed to maintain a disinfected environment where microorganisms are maintained below some specified contaminant level. This step is especially important if the water will be stored for any length of time. The persistence of biocides in water after initial loading can prevent or mitigate biofouling of process equipment, maintain personnel health and safety by preventing the transmission of waterborne diseases such as Legionnaires disease and inhibit microbiological induced corrosion in piping networks. This talk will discuss the meaning of appropriate water quality from the industrial process water use perspective and provide an overview the treatment methods used to achieve water quality objectives.
