This presentation will review the standards and industry practices for managing Independent Protection Layers (IPLs). IPLs are the result of Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA) or similar semi-quantitative/quantitative risk assessment (QRA). Managing the IPL lifecycle is critical to ensuring independence, auditability, and efficacy of the devices, processes, and maintenance that prevent major incidents. Managing the entire lifecycle ensures that common causes, both specific and systemic, do not overlap and lead to an incident when a deviation occurs in a process.
