Case Study in Organizational Risk Profiling – Bridging the Gap between Risk and Decision Making

Abstract

Many organizations today struggle with bridging the gap between the asset-level process safety risks that are known by the process safety professionals and operations leaders in an organization and the decisions that are made and actions taken in relation to these risks by executives. Organizations have increasingly used tools such as risk registers and audit scores to shape management direction, but too often these items are on their own not compelling enough. In this paper, the author will share his experience working with a multi-national high hazard manufacturing organization in the creation of a corporate-wide risk profiling tool to enable more real-time and informed decision making by the corporate safety team and executives. The author will describe the process for selection of existing inputs to the tool, such as Key Performance Indicators and work process outputs, in addition to new inputs and the impact of local plant culture on the results. Finally, the author will describe how this tool is used practically by the organization to drive higher levels of risk-based decision making and asset prioritization.
