In the last 5 years, two API documents for identifying and controlling damage mechanisms have been issued. These documents are likely to be considered recognized and generally accepted good engineering practice (RAGAGEP) by OSHA, and this is anticipated by many chemical and petrochemical companies. An overview of API 584 on integrity operating windows (IOWs) and API 970 on corrosion control documents (CCDs) will be given. The importance of the damage mechanism review to both activities will be described, and the advantages of co-development will be emphasized. The benefits of CCDs & IOWs to mechanical integrity programs will be highlighted, and ethylene unit examples will be shared.
