Unlike Equation Based Optimizer, DMC Controller Models are inherently Empirical based models. Therefore, there are no certainties that incremental mass balance(s) is/are honored. Therefore, models must be engineered to enforce Incremental Mass Balance Conservation. In this presentation, we will present two examples with increasing complexity to illustrate the point. Frequently encountered first case where the Distillation Tower Bottom Section Tray Temperature Setpoint is a Manipulated Variable and then perhaps less frequently encountered second case where the Reboiler Flow Setpoint is a Manipulated Variable.
