EVALUATING LICENSED PROCESS TECHNOLOGY LEADING TO IMPROVED REFINERY MARGIN
ABSTRACT
Refinery reconfiguration, expansion or greenfield development usually requires new treating and conversion units that contain unique or proprietary technology. Providers of Engineering Services, as part of the technique of advising clients on available technology, go through the effort of ranking several “providers of technology”. The goal is to furnish the lowest cost process unit to improve the refinery margin.
This paper describes the procedure involved in doing technical and commercial evaluations of licensed process technology. Further, the document outlines the steps involved in the process technology evaluation, and discusses the issues that need to be considered. Some key aspects of the licensor evaluation will normally include:
- Commercial demonstration of the proposed technology
- Significant technical aspects of the technology
- Capital, royalties and operating costs associated with the application of the technology
- Guarantees offered
- Ranking techniques
