Efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by operating facilities have intensified over recent years to meet growing demands from companies, governmental institutions, and the public. The âZero Routine Flaring by 2030â initiative was launched by the World Bank and the United Nations in 2015 with the goal of eliminating routine flaring in upstream facilities by 2030 for which major companies in industry have already pledged. The principles of this initiative can also be applied to operating facilities by eliminating non-emergency flaring and minimizing emergency flaring. In this presentation, I will discuss the various sources of flaring at operating facilities and how the flaring can be reduced including options such as flare gas recovery systems, the use of instrumentation, rerouting of relief streams, and more.
