The significance of Safety Culture is becoming increasingly recognized as a key factor to achieve the safe operation of hazardous processes. This paper describes the four stages that manufacturing companies go through in their journey to a world class safety culture and applies this concept to Process Safety Management.

The foundation for this journey will be illustrated in a model that describes the four stages of culture strength including reactive, dependent, independent, and interdependent. The model has been calibrated against performance and is based on years of data from both DuPont facilities and external companies. In addition, useful tools, employed by manufacturing facilities to improve their safety culture and performance, will be presented.
