Our laboratory contains calorimeters to characterize reactive chemical hazards and multiple different instruments to characterize both dust and gas/vapor explosion hazards. It is a challenge to ensure that each project is completed safely since a wide variety of chemicals are used. Our goal at Fauske is to have zero Days Away Cases Reported (DACR) which we have successfully done since 1992. This statistic is impressive given that we routinely perform hundreds of experiments per year. Best practices will be shared for general lab safety, review of Material Safety Data Sheets, hazard identification and development of safe experimental procedures.
