The talk will highlight the evolution of Mixed Matrix Membranes (MMM), developed in the mid-1980s.  The talk will first provide an introduction into the strategic thinking that led to the development of the water stable adsorbent ADS-200.  ADS-200 is a cellulose acetate bound zeolite used in the commercial UOP Sorbex process for adsorptive fructose separation.   This concept of combining a polymer and zeolite matrix for use in an adsorptive separation process was an inspiration in the creation of MMM.  The talk will conclude by describing the connection between the adsorption technology and membrane technology that led to the development of MMM.
