This paper outlines the content of a new CCPS guidelines book entitled Guidelines For Recognizing And Responding To Normalization Of Deviation.  As defined in the CCPS Process Safety Glossary, normalization of deviation is a gradual erosion of standards of performance as a result of increased tolerance of nonconformance.  This book contains guidance on identifying normalization of deviation and provides techniques that can be utilized to reduce its occurrence in operating areas and throughout the entire organization.  The tie-in between traditional process safety concepts including risk management, inherently safer design, human factors, safety management systems, and safety culture and normalization of deviation is discussed and illustrated with examples.
