Advances in technologies for in situ repair of piping, has created the possibility that the anticipated service life of pipe repairs may equal or exceed the expected life of the repaired components. ASME PCC-2 guideline does not differentiate between permanent and temporary repairs, leaving the Owner to assess the associated risk of continuing service.
Certain repair methods allowable under ASME PCC-2 guidelines cannot be monitored with conventional Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) methods and present a need for novel and proven field inspection tools and methods to monitor the integrity of the underlying component or repair over time.
Novel inspection techniques, including Dynamic Response Spectroscopy (DRS), Chime and Multiskip have been developed and found useful in evaluation of composite overwrap repairs and corrosion under pipe supports (CUPS). These techniques and methods have been evaluated and correlated in several blind trials.
